Quick Talk Answers

1.  What do you know about aikido?

Not much, really. I know it's a martial art and it started in Japan hundreds of years ago. I also know it's a form of unarmed combat, or self-defence. The aim is to throw your opponent onto the ground. I also know that the police in Japan learn a form of aikido in their training.

2.  Can you explain the rules of judo?

That's a difficult question. I think I can. The goal of judo is to throw your opponent to the ground and keep them there for 20 seconds. Or throw your opponent onto their back. You cannot kick or punch your opponent. You are also not allowed to touch your opponent's face. Some of the rules are a bit confusing.

3.  What do you know about sumo?

I really like sumo, so I know a lot about it. It's a full-contact sport. It combines, skill, bravery, power and tradition. There are 82 kimarite, or winning techniques that a rikishi can use. "Rikishi" in English is "wrestler". The wrestlers fight on a dohyo made of sand. "Dohyo" in English is "ring". Like a boxing ring, except a boxing ring is square.

4.  What martial art is best at teaching us discipline?

I think archery is best to teach us discipline. You really need to combine technique with mental and physical discipline. I think it's great for dealing with stress. Bows and arrows used to be weapons to fight and kill people, but now they are used in schools to build the character of students.

5.  What martial art is best for defending ourselves?

Maybe the best martial art to defend ourselves is one that uses a sword. But we can't use swords today, so I guess it's something like judo. We don't need any weapons. I also think judo means we can avoid getting an injury or injuring our opponent. It's good to stop bullying in schools.

6.  What do you think of archery (弓道)?

Archery is an amazing sport. It develops our mind and character, and it teaches us discipline. You really need to master the technique of using a bow and arrow. I love what archers wear when they take part in competitions. It looks so cool. Japanese tradition is an important part of archery. I love it.
