Yuki:
Hello Bob. Are you OK? You look like you are (1) [on / in] pain. Did you hurt yourself?

Bob:
I am in pain, Yuki. But I didn't hurt myself. My muscles all over my body are very sore. My whole body is sore. I think I (2) [overdone / overdid] things in the gym.

Yuki:
Why? What happened?

Bob:
I had my first karate lesson yesterday. It's the first time I've done any kind of exercise for (3) [the / a] few years. The karate instructor was very strict. We had to do many push-ups and sit-ups. The last time I did sit-ups was about 10 years ago. So now I'm sore (4) [all / every] over. My stomach muscles are especially sore.

Yuki:
Oh. Poor Bob. You'll be OK in a few days. I'm sure all that exercise will help you get big muscles. Why are you (5) [doing / playing] karate? It's a great martial art, but you need a lot of discipline. You need to be very strict with yourself, every day.

Bob:
I want to be very (6) [fitness / fit] . And I heard that karate is also good for the mind, not just the body.

Yuki:
Yes, it is. Doing karate is good for the mind and body. I didn't know you were (7) [onto / into] martial arts.

Bob:
I've always liked watching martial arts. I love (8) [watching / watch] judo and karate in the Olympics. I also love sumo. It's very (9) [interesting / interested] to think that so many martial arts started in Japan. When I was a kid, I thought all Japanese people were good at karate or judo. Are you into martial arts?

Yuki:
You'll be surprised Bob. I'm a black belt in karate and I'm very good (10) [to / at] kendo.

Bob:
Wow. Really? You kept that quiet. Do you still do karate and kendo? I don't really know so much about judo.

Yuki:
I still do karate. I help to teach karate to elementary school children (11) [in / at] the weekend. That helps me to stay fit. I love the (12) [stretching / stretchy] exercises when I warm up. But I stopped doing kendo when I went to university. I liked it, but it's really tough. I think it helped me increase my (13) [confident / confidence] .

Bob:
That's so cool. A black belt in karate. Maybe I could get a black belt if I practiced a lot. What do you think?

Yuki:
Yes. Of course you can, if you are really (14) [seriously / serious] . But you need to practice a lot. And it'll take many years.

Bob:
So, you have a black belt in karate. Does that mean you (15) [should / could] protect yourself if someone attacked you?

Yuki:
I think so. I'm pretty good at karate kicks. My sensei also told me I'm good at punching. And I'm good at (16) [throwing / thrown] people. I think I'm also good at blocking punches.

Bob:
Are there any other martial arts you'd like to take up?

Yuki:
Take up?

Bob:
'Take up' means 'start doing'. I just (17) [ taken / took] up karate. That's why my muscles are so sore and I can't move today.

Yuki:
Oh. I'd quite like to take up judo. I think that would also help me to keep fit and (18) [keep / help] my body flexible. I also think archery would be good. You need a lot of discipline but it isn't so tough on the body. That would help my mind to stay (19) [focused / focus] . How about you Bob?

Bob:
Not sure. I'll decide after my muscles are no longer sore. I think judo could help me to defend (20) [myself / me] if someone attacked me.
